Gold Coast to lend support to National Tree Day

07 July 2009

Gold Coasters are being encouraged to do their bit for the environment and plant a tree on National Tree Day being celebrated on 2 August 2009.

Local MP Steven Ciobo said local schools, community organisations, businesses or neighbourhood groups should register for National Tree Day in an effort to promote the environment and community.

“It is important locals continue to feel proud of the wonderful landscape we’ve been blessed with and work towards supporting our local wildlife and ecosystems,” Mr Ciobo said.

“National Tree Day is an enjoyable and fun way to promote the environment and the community, and all Gold Coasters should find some way to get involved in the event.”

National Tree Day is run by 300,000 volunteers from schools, businesses and around 75 community groups at 3,500 tree-planting sites around Australia.

The annual event invites community members to plant native shrubs and trees in their local areas to promote native biodiversity and guard against habitat loss which threatens our native wildlife.

National Tree Day seeks to give Gold Coasters a sense of community, ownership and pride as they watch the trees they plant, grow and mature.

“Living on the Gold Coast, we can often take for granted the amazing beauty which surrounds us, and National Tree Day is a fantastic opportunity for locals to get involved in maintaining our environment and give something back,” Mr Ciobo said.

“It is important we take steps today to ensure future generations will be able to enjoy the same beauty.”

Another initiative which National Tree Day has employed is utilising schools as a great starting point for getting the younger generations involved.

Schools Tree Day is a standalone day where students are given the opportunity to plant trees and shrubs, and in doing so, encourages their awareness of environmental issues.

“Schools should take advantage of this initiative to educate children about the values of our environment and how they can become interested and support environmental causes,” Mr Ciobo said.
