Ciobo urges Gold Coasters to get prostate-wise

11 September 2009

Local MP Steven Ciobo has thrown his support behind Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, coined The Difference is You.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA) month-long campaign will serve to remind people the significant difference they can make in reducing the impact of prostate cancer by helping support research into new treatments.

“I encourage all Gold Coasters, not just men, but their wives, partners and families as well, to learn more about this disease and the steps they can take to help prevent it,” Mr Ciobo said.

“In 2010 an estimated 130 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in my electorate alone, so I urge men try and learn more about this awful disease, spread awareness and encourage education.

“Prostate cancer has a heavy burden on our country, reaching beyond the victims and their families.”

The latest data shows that in 2010 almost 20,000 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Tragically more than 3300 men will die annually as a direct cause of prostate cancer.

The new The Difference is You campaign hopes to raise much needed funds to support community initiatives and research projects.

“The PCFA is dedicated to raising community awareness about prostate cancer and funding essential research projects. It is only through generous contributions that the PCFA are able to back such promising projects each year. This September I urge all locals to support the cause the best way they can.

“This month-long campaign hopes to demonstrate the impact prostate cancer has on all Gold Coast families, and shows how easy it is for each individual to make a difference.

“The PCFA is dedicated to raising community awareness about prostate cancer and funding essential research projects. I am calling upon all Gold Coasters to join with me to raise awareness and education about prostate cancer.”

In the early stages there are few symptoms of prostate cancer. However, if detected early, prostate cancer is often treatable and curable.
